Stenciled holiday wrap

Stenciled holiday wrap is a fun and creative way to personalize your gift wrapping. Using simple materials like potatoes, paint, and paper, you can create unique designs that will impress your friends and family.

History

The tradition of stenciling holiday wrap dates back to ancient times when people would use natural materials like leaves and berries to create decorative patterns on paper. Over the years, this technique has evolved to include more modern materials like potatoes and paint.

Ingredients

  • 1 potato
  • Tempura or Poster Paints
  • Brown Paper, Craft Paper
  • Shelf Paper Untreated
  • Wallpaper or Parchment
  • Paper

How to prepare

  1. 1. Cut the potato in half lengthwise or crosswise.
  2. 2. Using a desired shape of a cookie cutter, cut into the cut surface of the potato about 0.25" deep.
  3. 3. With a small sharp knife, cut the potato away from the edge of the design to the edge of the potato; remove the cookie cutter.
  4. 4. If desired, repeat with the other potato half for an additional design.
  5. 5. Pour the paint into a shallow dish.
  6. 6. Dip the stencil in the paint; blot once on a paper towel, then print on paper.
  7. 7. Continue until the surface of the paper is painted with the design.
  8. 8. Children will feel proud to give gifts wrapped in paper they have designed themselves.
  9. 9. Be sure to look for paints that are washable. (I have not tried this.)
  10. 10. This recipe comes from my Pillsbury "Holiday" cookbook, classic #14 by Marilyn Sultar.

How did I get this recipe?

The first time I saw this recipe, I was drawn to it like a magnet. It was a chilly December day, and I was at a holiday craft fair with my dear friend Margaret. As we wandered through the booths, admiring the handmade ornaments and decorations, we stumbled upon a table filled with beautifully wrapped gifts. Each one was adorned with intricate stenciled designs, creating a stunning and unique presentation.

I couldn't resist asking the woman behind the table how she had achieved such a beautiful effect. She smiled warmly and explained that she used a simple technique involving stencils and paint to create the stunning designs on the wrapping paper. Intrigued, I watched closely as she demonstrated the process, and I was immediately hooked.

I purchased a few stencils that day, along with some paint and a roll of plain kraft paper. I couldn't wait to try my hand at creating my own stenciled holiday wrap. When I returned home, I set up a makeshift workspace in my kitchen and got to work. I carefully selected a stencil with a festive snowflake pattern and began dabbing the paint onto the paper, creating a beautiful and intricate design.

As I worked, I felt a sense of joy and satisfaction wash over me. There was something so special about creating something beautiful with my own two hands, and I knew that this stenciled holiday wrap would add an extra touch of magic to my gifts that year.

I couldn't wait to show Margaret my handiwork, and she was just as impressed as I had hoped. Together, we spent hours stenciling paper and wrapping gifts, laughing and chatting as we worked. It became a beloved holiday tradition, one that we looked forward to each year.

Over time, I began to experiment with different stencils and paint colors, creating unique and personalized designs for each gift recipient. I even started to receive requests from friends and family members who wanted me to create custom stenciled wrap for their gifts.

As the years went by, my collection of stencils grew, and I became known for my beautifully wrapped gifts. People would often comment on the creativity and thoughtfulness of my presents, and I took great pride in knowing that I had added a special touch to their holiday celebrations.

I never could have imagined that a chance encounter at a holiday craft fair would lead me to discover a passion for stenciled holiday wrap. It has become not just a creative outlet for me, but a way to spread joy and magic during the holiday season.

Now, as I sit here surrounded by rolls of kraft paper, stencils, and paints, I can't help but feel grateful for the gift of creativity and the ability to share it with others. The memories of those early days spent stenciling with Margaret are etched in my heart, and I know that this tradition will continue to bring me joy for many more years to come.
